YouTube Premium has been expanding in a couple of ways over the last years, including adding tiers for families and students. A new YouTube Premium tier has appeared in select regions for groups of just two people, coming in at a lower cost than the full-fledged five-person offering.
YouTube Premium looks to be adding a new “two-person” variant in India, France, Taiwan, and Hong Kong (via MoneyControl). This will likely change if the feature succeeds and the company pushes it to a broader audience. The option will allow for two users in the same family to access YouTube Premium for a cheaper price than if those two subscriptions were to be separate.
According to the spot, this version of Premium will cost Rs 219 in India, while the family plan is Rs 299. Directly comparing pricing to the US would be difficult, but it would likely be somewhere in the $16/month range. That’s still better than two people buying individual YouTube Premium plans.
This is also worth it for YouTube Music users, considering this isn’t the Premium Lite plan. Premium Lite was launched a couple of months back, and it brings YouTube Premium to users who don’t want a music subscription tied to it. There is no word on whether or not Google will be adding family tiers to the Premium Lite model.
This comes as Google aims to expand subscription offerings for users. More users are watching on TVs as opposed to mobile devices, and the company is already looking at becoming more of a streaming service. The new YouTube Premium plan for two people makes it easier for users to find a plan that works for them.
There is no word on when the two-person option will roll out to more regions and users. It might be a while, considering YouTube Premium Lite was in the works for several years.
