YouTube Premium Lite Is Now Expanding To Canada, The UK, And Beyond

Summary

  • YouTube Premium Lite, a cheaper ad-free viewing option initially launched in the US, is now expanding to seven new countries: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the UK, Scotland, and Wales, following earlier expansion to Australia, Thailand, and Germany.
  • Priced at $7.99 USD/CAD (local pricing may vary), Premium Lite offers ad-free viewing across YouTube and YouTube Kids on various devices, but it does not include features like YouTube Music Premium, downloads, or background play, and some ads may still appear.
  • The rollout is happening gradually over the next few days, and users in the new regions can check the provided link in their YouTube settings to see if the Premium Lite option is available to them.

YouTube’s long-awaited Premium Lite subscription landed back in March, bringing a cheaper experience to those who only want an ad-free video-viewing experience, and nothing else.

To the dismay of the majority of users though, at the time, the pocket-friendly plan only made its way to users in the US. That changes now.

Confirmation of the expansion comes in the form of a new update to YouTube’s original Premium Lite rollout support post. Premium Lite is now rolling out to seven new countries: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the UK, Scotland, and Wales. The move follows the plan’s expansion to Australia, Thailand, and Germany in April.

“We’re slowly rolling this out over the next couple days, so hold tight,” wrote a YouTube Community Manager. I’m in Canada, and I have access to the new plan on only one out of three accounts, suggesting a phased rollout. Surprisingly, though, despite the exchange rate, the plan still costs $7.99/mo (Canadian Dollars) here — considerably cheaper than the regular $12.99/mo Premium plan price. To check if the plan is available to you, head to youtube.com/premiumlite and look for the new plan.

Going Lite?

YouTube Premium Lite can be used across devices (phones, tablets, TVs, and more), and works for YouTube Kids too. Of course, the plan is only perfect for those looking to enjoy ad-free videos.

YouTube Premium Lite does not offer the extended benefits that a regular YouTube Premium subscription does. This means that if you opt for the $7.99/mo plan, you won’t have access to ad-free YouTube Music, downloads, and background play. Additionally, users might also encounter ads in music videos, in the Shorts feed, and while searching or browsing for videos.
