YouTube is focusing on its TV experience more than ever, with a redesign on the horizon and a handful of new features that are starting to roll out. Here are a few new additions to look for.

Last month, YouTube announced that it would redesign its TV app. The company said that this would include “easier navigation, playback, quality tweaks, plus streamlined access to comments, channel info, and subscribing.” But it seems that a redesigned player is far from the only thing coming.

In a community post aimed at creators, YouTube recently detailed some of the new features coming to its TV app over the course of Q2 2025.

Google first explains new “Shelves” coming to the YouTube app for TVs. This includes one that lets you “Continue your search” with your top three searches, as well as recommendations “From your top channels.” These shelves will show up on the Home tab based on the visual YouTube provided.

  • The “Continue your search” shelf shows you your top three searches, allowing you to jump back in right where you left off.
  • The “Listen again” shelf is a dedicated music shelf that shows you the top songs you’ve previously searched for and listened to.
  • The “Live performances, remixes, and covers” shelf shows you other versions of your favorite songs, beyond the official versions.
  • The Primetime Channels shelf, for those subscribed, shows content from your most recently searched for and watched Primetime Channels.
  • The “From your top channels” shelf shows you your top watched YouTube channels.

Google also mentioned a new “Podcast” tab coming to the app, a feature we’ve seen appear in recent weeks.

An improvement coming over from the mobile app is a dedicated row for Shorts content in your subscriptions feed (pictured above). Currently, Shorts are mixed into your subscriptions on the YouTube app for TVs, which can quickly feel cluttered. Google adds that this new look may also appear in the “Watch Next” feed. It’s already used on the Home tab.

Finally, the YouTube app for TVs will add a loop playback option for videos instead of just playlists and expand inline video previews – the ones that appear when you hover over a video – to channel, subscription, and topics pages. The rollout of “Immersive Channel Previews” (fullscreen background previews) is also now “finished.”

The Q2 timeline that Google provided suggests that we’ll see all of these changes rolling out before the end of June. As mentioned, some are already available.
