Your Voice Chats With ChatGPT Just Got A Lot Better

OpenAI is constantly improving ChatGPT, its flagship product. Last year, the company launched Advanced Voice Mode for the chatbot. This mode allows you to have natural language conversations with the AI, similar to the Gemini Live experience. OpenAI has now enhanced this mode to make your voice chats with the ChatGPT assistant more natural.

If you’ve used Gemini Live, ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode will probably feel familiar to you. It allows you to talk to the AI almost as if it were another person, focusing more on the conversational experience than on requesting tasks—although it can do that too. Gemini Live has also received updates and improvements to achieve a more natural experience. For example, you can interrupt the assistant while it responds if you want to add something else, such as giving more details or simply asking something else.

Now, ChatGPT’s Advanced Voice Mode is receiving conversational improvements, focused on ensuring the assistant doesn’t interrupt you while you’re talking. It’s possible that during conversations, you might stop speaking for a second or two while you think about how to continue—similar to how you would talk to a person. During those moments, ChatGPT may initiate a response, assuming that you’ve finished.

However, the company has improved the assistant so it better interprets these “silent moments” and doesn’t interrupt you—or the interruptions are much less frequent. The conversational experience has also received background tweaks to make responses feel more natural. It seems like the company has been busy working on more than just its new o1-pro AI model.

Manuka Stratta, part of the post-training research team, showed the improvements in action in a short video. It shows how she intentionally pauses while speaking, and ChatGPT waits for her to finish without interrupting. Best of all, the improvements are also available to free users. The assistant is now “more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its answers,” according to an OpenAI spokesperson.
