Waze is rolling out a new update on Android and iOS which brings support for showing your navigation map and other details via the heads-up display (instrument cluster) in some vehicles.
A growing trend among new cars is to replace the instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a display – often called a heads-up display – enabling more flexibility in what can be shown, including new features. One of those new features is showing navigation in the instrument cluster, a change that’s closer to the driver’s line of sight, and opens the other display to additional functions such as controlling music.
Most vehicles only support showing navigation data through their own native infotainment systems, but a select few can pull data from apps on your phone. In an update rolling out now, Waze is adding support for this.
Following intermittent beta testing over the past few months, Waze 5.4 is now delivering support for showing navigation data via the instrument cluster on select vehicles. This update is live on both iOS and Android via CarPlay and Android Auto, as many Waze users on Reddit have found this week.
The change does require support from your car, though. As mentioned, only some brands support this, with notable examples being BMW, select Ford vehicles, and Volvo/Polestar. On Polestar vehicles, this is separate from the native Waze app, as it also now works through CarPlay and Android Auto. Data is limited just to maps and some directions, though. You won’t see or report road hazards.
Comment below if you’ve seen this go live in your vehicle lately.
Waze 5.4 is now rolling out via the Google Play Store for Android/Android Auto and the Apple App Store for iOS/CarPlay.
Meanwhile, a recent update removed support for the ETA in Google Maps from the instrument cluster of some Volvo and Polestar vehicles.
