U.S. Navy Bans Use Of DeepSeek’s AI Citing Security Concerns
Contents
DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company, is currently the hottest topic in the AI industry. Why? DeepSeek released its new open-source reasoning AI model called R1, which beats the industry-leading OpenAI’s o1 model in reasoning tasks. Ever since its introduction, DeepSeek has garnered praise from some popular figures in the AI industry. However, experts have way too many concerns about the Chinese AI chatbot. No wonder, the US Navy has decided to ban the use of DeepSeek AI.
The US Navy has banned using DeepSeek’s AI
On January 28th, CNBC reported that the US Navy sent out an email warning “shipmates” not to use DeepSeek’s AI “in any capacity” citing “potential security and ethical concerns.” As we mentioned earlier, China is the homeland of DeepSeek, and given the country’s relationship with the US, the Navy banning the use of the AI chatbot makes sense.
The email was sent last Friday referring to the Department of the Navy’s Chief Information Officer’s generative AI policy. A part of the US Navy’s email to shipmates reads, “We would like to bring to your attention a critical update regarding a new AI model called DeepSeek.”
Per the report, the US Navy members should refrain from using DeepSeek’s AI for any purpose as part of the ban. Not to mention, they are also prohibited from downloading or installing DeepSeek’s AI app “in any capacity.”
The AI company is collecting way too much user data
If you are someone willing to use DeepSeek’s AI, don’t forget that it poses a massive security threat. A quick look at the company’s privacy policy suggests that it collects pretty much every kind of data. Many of which you wouldn’t want to share with anyone—not even your friend. One of many reasons why the US Navy banned the use of DeepSeek’s AI.
Meanwhile, OpenAI has promised to launch “much better” AI models than what DeepSeek recently released. Speaking of OpenAI, DeepSeek’s AI app recently snatched the crown of ChatGPT for being the most downloaded free app on the App Store.
