This Samsung Patent Could Be The Blueprint For Its First Rollable Phone

Summary: Samsung is developing a vertically expanding rollable smartphone that transforms from a compact device into a full-sized screen, but it’s still in the early stages and unlikely to launch this year. A recent patent hints at a dual-camera design and thick bottom bezel, with pricing and economic timing likely delaying its debut.

Samsung is working on a vertical rollable smartphone, big surprise there, right? It looks like Samsung’s first rollable smartphone is coming together quite nicely, as @xleaks7 has spotted a patent that reveals what the first Samsung rollable would look like.

While some other rollable concepts we’ve seen recently expand horizontally, Samsung’s is going to expand vertical. Going from a smaller, pocketable device, to a larger full-sized screen. Though, we’re unsure what the screen sizes would be. It does look to be very compact when it if fully rolled up.

Samsung does also have a dual-camera setup on the rear, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip lineup. However, it does appear to have a pretty thick bottom bezel. This is not that surprising, since that is likely where the motor and the rest of the screen lives when it is not expanded. Of course, we saw huge bezels on early foldable devices, so this is likely going to improve after a couple of generations.

Don’t expect a Samsung rollable this year

It would be very surprising to see Samsung release a rollable device this year, or even show off a concept. So far, they have not shown off a concept rollable device – only Samsung Display has. So we are likely still quite a ways off from the device being made available. However, I do think Samsung will be one of the first to release a rollable smartphone. Despite seeing concepts from some other phone makers – including LG before it decided to kill off its smartphone business.

The first rollable is going to be quite pricey, due to all of the new parts that are expensive to make, as well as all of the R&D spent on making the device. So it’s probably not a good idea to release it in the current economic climate.
