Bendable E Ink screens have been a thing for some time now. Heck, you can buy bendy E Ink screens on Amazon to build your own device with, they have hit the masses, just not in any popular consumer e-reading products, at least not yet. Well, with screens that bend, it was inevitable that we would eventually see a folding E Ink device.
Thanks to an announcement at Touch Taiwan (via Good E-Reader), we now know a company called Readmoo has revealed the Mooink V, a folding E Ink device built with a color E Ink screen. The device is set to launch soon, though there is currently no word on which regions will see the launch. However, if you live in the US and want to see the Mooink V for yourself, a live demo will be available at Display Week in San Jose, California, which runs from May 11th to the 16th, with exhibitionsopen from May 13th to 15th.

All it took was nine years of development
Readmoo teamed up with the company E Ink (that’s who designs and makes the screens slapped into our e-reading hardware) to create the Mooink V. It’s utilizing a Gallery 3 color e-paper screen that boasts 300 PPI that supports 50K colors, and the panels appears to be customized with new materials as well as optimized to how the screen layers are stacked, with heavy testing of the folding fucntionality surpassing 200K folds. E Ink is known to customize its screens for its partners, like Amazon and Remarkable, so it isn’t incredibly surprising to learn lots of testing and tweaks were needed to ensure this E Ink screen can fold reliably with extended use.
Even more interesting, the Mooink V is utilizing an aluminum/magnesium alloy body to keep weight down, a smart move to keep this folding e-reader light so users can enjoy the 8-inch screen without tiring their arms. The screen can fold out flat, allowing you to take advantage of all 8 inches in landscape or portrait, and since the device folds, you can also fold one side of the screen 90 degrees, which would feel more like a traditional book holding the e-reader in landscape. Essentially, the Mooink V was made to mimic the experience of reading a traditional book, and the above video from E Ink showcases precisely how that works.
As we near the date for Readmoo’s Mooink V live demo at Display Week in California next month, we should ideally hear more about the world’s first folding color e-reader and where and when it should launch. So keep your fingers crossed the Mooink V will see a US release, as this is one of the most interesting E Ink devices to cross our path in ages.
