It’s a device I wouldn’t mind carrying around in my pocket, and it always starts a conversation when I pull it out. 4 Vibrant and versatile external screen

No need for other programs

Ease of use is a considerable factor with clamshell folding phones, and Motorola understands that with the Razr 2025. The external screen is the most usable of any flip phone, and I love that I don’t need to rely on Good Lock to configure it for third-party apps like on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. Within moments of setting up my Razr 2025, I can swipe over to the apps tile and add Instagram or WhatsApp. Sure, you’ll run into the occasional incompatibility, but the trade-off is worth it.

Facebook scrolls are satisfying on the Razr 2025, and I enjoy how easily I can swap views, extending the screen around the camera lens for added space. Motorola added a games tile with fun distractions that are easy to jump into, perfect for short waits at the train stop or in line at the grocery checkout. I can still use the Razr’s outer panel for widgets, but I don’t feel limited, like I do on the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

3 A quality folding phone for less

The price point matters for buyers

Clamshell folding phones easily outpace the sales of book-style folding devices, partly due to their lower prices. It’s much more palatable for us to plunk down $1,000 on a premium device than pay upwards of $2,000 on a phone like the Galaxy Z Fold 6. With the Motorola Razr 2025, we get to spend even less. Motorola offers more value for the money this year, with an improved chipset and a larger battery. I liked the base model in previous years, but the Razr 2025 is the first time I recommend it over the Razr+ for most buyers.

It’s also essential to spur competition under $1,000. I had always hoped that folding phone prices would go down, but the opposite has happened. The Motorola Razr 2025 is a step in the right direction, and with the company improving the build quality this year, it proves you can have a well-made folding phone for under $1,000. Inexpensive doesn’t always mean cheap, and I’m glad Motorola is displaying that.

2 Doesn’t matter how powerful it is if the battery runs out

All day usage and then some

I don’t care how impressive a phone is; if the battery can’t last an entire day, it’s useless. Thankfully, the Motorola Razr 2025 features a 4,500mAh battery. In testing, I was able to get a day and a half of mixed usage on a single charge — more than enough at this price range. Battery life was a weakness of early clamshell foldables, but I haven’t had an issue with Motorola’s last two generations. A bigger battery helps, but the Razr 2025 performs well for other reasons.

You might not be able to power through intense games like you would with a Snapdragon 8 Elite, but the MediaTek Dimensity 7400X has other advantages. It’s power-efficient, helping the Razr 2025 achieve all-day battery life without needing to be topped off. The external screen also plays a role, limiting the number of times we have to unfold the device to activate its 6.9-inch display. A smaller display consumes less power, allowing you to enjoy a full day of battery life on your Razr 2025.

I still get a kick out of slamming a flip phone shut. It’s a satisfaction only someone who grew up using the original flip phones can fully enjoy. Clamshells are just fun to use, and the Razr’s styling is the best of them all. It’s a matter of personal preference, but the Galaxy Z Flip series’ design is somewhat utilitarian, lacking a truly dazzling appeal. The Razr 2025 is stunning. I appreciate people who prefer the Gibraltar Sea colorway, but you’re doing it wrong if you don’t buy Spring Bud. It’s a fantastically vibrant mint color that looks amazing.

Folding phones make sense to a wide range of users. It’s a full-fledged smartphone experience when you need it, but a compact companion when you don’t. Even if you’re not an enthusiast, impressed by the technology, you can still appreciate the style and find it cool to hold and use. I never feel the same way using the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

The Motorola Razr 2025 brings style and performance

I’m looking forward to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. It will give Samsung a chance to compete at a lower price point, but if the leaks are accurate, it’s still not the clamshell I want in my pocket. Rumors suggest Samsung is using the same design as the Galaxy Z Flip 6. While sturdy, it’s not what I’m looking for from a Motorola Razr 2025 competitor. If your budget is $700, the Motorola Razr 2025 is the best folding phone you can buy.
