Summary

  • The Google app’s Activity tab, which has been in development since last year, is now rolling out widely.
  • This tab brings together your search history and saved items for quick access to relevant information.
  • Google is also giving the Daily Listen card a new monochrome look that aligns with recent design changes.

Google has taken its sweet time to implement the Activity tab that we first learned about last year. Barring appearances on the beta channel over the past few months, there was little info to suggest this new tab would be widely available. But thankfully, that’s changing now.

Did you know the Google app takes up more than a gigabyte on your phone?

I’ll be honest, this came as a shock to me. I forget where I read it, likley social media, but apparently the Google app is a chonker, taking up over a gigabyte of storage. I’m looking at the app info screen on my Pixel, and for me it’s eating 1.58 GB of my phone’s storage. That’s a lot, and I’m betting a few of you weren’t aware of this. So enjoy, and better yet, go ahead and check for yourself and see how much room the Google app is taking up on your device. Maybe there’s a lucky reader out there somehow coming in under a gig. You never know.

According to reporting by 9to5Google, the Activity tab is now widely available to all users of the Google app. I was able to find it on my Android smartphone running v16.19 of the app, though it’s unclear if older Google app versions will trigger its appearance. If you’re using an older version, now may be a good time to head to the Play Store and hit that update button.

It’s been a long time coming

The Activity tab houses your Google account’s search history, Saved items, and Collections. Saved items can include practically everything from a Google Maps location of a place you want to go, a movie or TV show you want to watch, or even images or websites you’ve saved on your account for later.

Meanwhile, Collections groups all your saved items into folders that can be arranged manually or left in their default order. This is a relatively new part of the Activity tab, with the initial version we stumbled upon last year only featuring the sections titled History and Saved items.

As 9to5Google rightly points out, Collections has another access point from the account switcher menu’s Saves & Collections option. Although some of these changes can be a little confusing initially, the Activity tab is a step in the right direction as it gives you access to more items in one place.

In addition to this new tab in the app’s bottom bar, Google is also giving the Daily Listen card a lighter outline and removing its blue background color. This change, as you can see above, makes the card blend in better with the rest of the items on the page. We can also notice the updated row of shortcuts below the search bar, spotted during the recent AI Mode-related reshuffling.
