The Galaxy S25 Ultra is the most premium—and expensive—model in the S25 lineup. The device boasts a few extra build perks that, in theory, make it more durable. The list includes a titanium frame and a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass Armor 2 for its display. To verify its resistance to unexpected accidents, Allstate Protection Plans subjected the Galaxy S25 Ultra to a tough drop test.
The insurance firm’s tests included dropping the device front-down, side-down, and back-down from a height of six feet (about 1.82 meters) onto concrete. To do this, they used a robot that is already typical in their “experiments” that adds some speed to the fall. The goal is to test the durability of the device against incidents where similar conditions can occur.
Galaxy S25 Ultra was rendered unusable after front-down drop test
The front-down drop test was the one that made the Galaxy S25 suffer the most since it left it unusable. The screen went mostly black, preventing access to the phone’s functions. While Corning claims its Gorilla Glass Armor 2 can withstand drops of up to 2.2 meters, the glass was shattered. However, this can vary depending on both the force of the fall and the surface the S25 Ultra “lands” on. The physical buttons still worked, though, opening the door for a potential repair. That said, it’s probably going to be pretty expensive if your device doesn’t have some sort of insurance.
In the back-down drop test, Samsung’s latest flagship phone came out better, but not unscathed. The back glass of the device was shattered, while the rear cover was also bent. Two camera rings were damaged after this fall. That said, the smartphone’s screen still worked, so we can say it survived. However, the chipped rear glass makes using the phone without a case dangerous.
Lastly, the side-down drop test was where the Galaxy S25 Ultra fared the best. The device only suffered minor damage on the side of the titanium frame that collided with the concrete surface. The rest of the phone was left intact.
Smartphones are still very prone to severe damage from accidental drops
In short, while the Galaxy S25 Ultra seems quite durable, there’s a limit. An accidental front-facing drop can render your expensive phone useless, as Allstate Protection Plans have proven. A back-down drop can also cause serious damage to the body of the phone. So, the company recommends that you take a look at some of its protection plans on its website. These can be especially helpful if you’re someone who doesn’t use a case on your phone.
