T-Mobile’s ‘Un-Carrier’ Era Is Over—Legacy Plan Holders Hit With Another Price Hike

Remember when T-Mobile announced its Price Lock gimmick back in 2022? Well, apparently, they forgot, too. T-Mobile is now raising prices for customers on their legacy plans.

This comes after raising prices last June for customers on its current plans. Now, T-Mobile is raising prices for customers on some of its older plans. T-Mobile has also stated in a leaked memo that customers who saw a price increase last year will not see one this time around. T-Mobile is notifying affected customers by text or email today. Those who don’t receive a text or email about a price increase on March 13 are not affected.

It’s currently unclear how many customers this will affect, as T-Mobile (and other carriers) don’t disclose how many customers on each rate plan type. But a $5 increase per month per line is no small increase, especially for a family of four. That’s another $20 out of their pocket every month.

T-Mobile also notes that existing benefits and rate plan types will remain the same. So, T-Mobile is not pushing people off of these older plans yet.

T-Mobile cites “rising costs” as the reason for this increase

In the memo that leaked, T-Mobile’s president, Jon Freier, is citing “rising costs over the past several years” as the reason for this price increase. It’s not surprising to see such a vague reason, as other carriers have also raised costs over the past year or so.

But this isn’t sitting well with customers on r/TMobile. With a few citing T-Mobile’s latest earnings report, which touted the company had shareholder returns of $14.4 billion in 2024 alone. It wouldn’t be surprising to see a number of customers at least looking to leave T-Mobile over this, if not leave entirely. Many on Reddit are mentioning US Mobile, which does work on all three carriers, and offers truly unlimited (on AT&T’s network) for just $44/month.
