Spotify Will Get A New Android Auto App 'in The Coming Months' With Jam Support [Gallery]

With the help of changes in Android Auto, Spotify is getting a brand new app for the platform that includes support for its “Jam” feature.

As a part of its car-related announcements for Google I/O, an overhauled Spotify experience for Android Auto was unveiled. This updated app relies on Google’s “Car App Library” for Android Auto and Android Automotive OS, which now allows for more flexibility in how apps can be developed for these platforms.

In Spotify’s case, the major change coming is support for “Jam” on Android Auto.

This feature allows other Spotify users to connect to someone’s ongoing playing queue without the need for pairing to another device. Simply scan a code and you can contribute songs to what’s playing through your friend’s smartphone. Soon, that will be possible via Android Auto, with a “Jam” button appearing in the corner of the Now Playing interface, bringing up a QR code for others to scan when it is pressed. The car’s display can show who is in a Jam and also remove them as needed.

It’s a very clever implementation, and something that could certainly be quite useful for road trips.

Google says that Spotify’s new app is coming to Android Auto “in the coming months,” and that updates to Amazon Music and YouTube Music will also be coming as a result of new flexibility in media apps on the platform.
