Sony PS6 Portable Might Play PS5 Games Without Any Extra Work

Summary: Sony is reportedly developing a portable version of the PS6 that can run PS5 games. It’s also said that developers won’t need to employ any sort of special patch to make this possible.

Sony is rumored to be making a portable version of the PS6 console that players will be able to take on the go, and a new report suggests that it will be capable of running PS5 games without the need for developers to do any sort of special work to make it happen.

In other words, you can just install a PS5 version of a game, just as if you were installing it on a PS5, and the game will run. This could be a significant development if it actually ends up being true. As it would make the PS6 Portable (or PS6P for short) a formidable little portable console. Provided everything runs smoothly and delivers a decent experience.

All of that said, it’s important to remember that these are just rumors, for now. There is, so far, no official confirmation that Sony plans to make and release a portable PlayStation 6 console in addition to a home version. Even if it does, the PS6 generation is still likely a few years away.

There may be a catch to playing PS5 games on the portable PS6

The idea of a PS6 handheld playing games from the PS5 generation is exciting, to say the least. However, there may be a catch to the whole thing. While this capability might not need developer intervention, there could be a downside. Wccftech points out that without it, games may face some challenges with performance. Details of the leak come from the NeoGAF forums, where leaker KeplerL2 states that the portable console will include shader binary compatibility.

What this means in simple terms is that it should be able to run games from the PS5 without developers needing to update them to be compatible. However, KeplerL2 also states that performance could take a hit. From a player’s perspective, it might not be worth playing a PS5 game on this console if the performance isn’t good. However, that sort of also depends on how much of a hit the performance takes. If it takes any at all.

This is all just speculation at this point anyway. Since the console is still likely at least two years away, if it’s even coming in the first place. Sony has been rumored to be making a handheld that plays PS5 games natively, but it’s also not confirmed if this portable PS6 and the previously rumored handheld are one and the same.

Performance won’t be as good as PS5, but it will be better than Xbox Series S

In terms of performance, the PS6 Portable is said to be less powerful than the base PS5. If this is accurate, it would make sense if performance drops for PS5 games. Performance is also said to be better than the Xbox Series S, however. So it should be decent enough for handheld gaming. The SoC being used is designed to run at lower voltages as well. Additionally, the SoC should be designed by AMD.
