Many people have come to rely on their smartphones as alarm clocks, which is why an issue with failing alarms on Google Pixel devices is so… alarming.
Over the past week or so, a number of Google Pixel owners – Pixel 9 series in particular – have been reporting issues with alarm clocks that are not going off as scheduled. This is an issue worth taking with a grain of salt, as there are quite a few points for user error when it comes to an alarm, but there’s certainly a trend with this.
Reddit threads on March 20 first signaled there might be a fairly wide issue, as dozens of reports of failed alarms flooded into the comments of one post about a failed alarm clock. For some users, alarms failed or went off late, while others saw a notification that the alarm was “unable to fire.” Others have since said that their alarms were marked as turned off. Android Police points out that some users seem to think that Gemini may be playing a role, with a bug perhaps turning off all alarms if you ask it to turn off one (or a timer).
There are several theories at play here, and also several different symptoms, so it’s hard to say what exactly the problem may be. It is clear, though, that something is amiss with Pixel alarms. It could be due to the latest Clock update, which started rolling out earlier this month but, again, it’s hard to say for certain.
