Some Android Users Impacted By ‘Update Google Play Services’ Bug

Google Play services is responsible for powering a great number of features on modern Android devices. Some Android users today have been getting a “Update Google Play services” notification today.

The “Update Google Play services” notification is being sent by various first-party Google apps. Google Messages and Search cannot function properly without Play services in most cases.

Tapping opens the Play Store listing for Google Play services — direct link here — but no update is actually available. The latest stable version is 25.09.33.

Users are able to dismiss the notification, but it appears again after a few minutes. Troubleshooting steps like reboot or clearing Storage/Cache (which is not recommended) does not resolve the notification.

As such, this is most likely a bug. There are several user reports today across Pixel and Samsung devices, but it doesn’t appear to be a widespread issue at the moment. Hopefully, Google can address this with a server-side fix.
