Snapchat Is Developing Its In-House Image Generator Tool

Snapchat is working on its in-house image generator tool. Previously, the social media company has relied on third-party AI generative image tools like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT to power some of its features. However, Snapchat’s parent company, Snap, has just introduced an in-house AI text-to-image research model for mobile devices. Snap will use it to power several Snapchat features that require AI image generation.

Snap has introduced a new text-to-image model that’ll power a variety of Snapchat features

TechCrunch reports that Snapchat is developing an in-house artificial intelligence-powered image generation tool. The AI model can create high-resolution AI photos in under 1.5 seconds on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Notably, the new diffusion model runs entirely on your smartphone. It reduces computational costs compared to other models that rely solely on large servers.

“Snap has a long history of research excellence in model optimization and efficiency,” the company said in a blog post. “We are inspired by the industry innovation that is making AI tools more efficient, affordable, and accessible and we look forward to continuing to contribute to the rapid pace of innovation, particularly for mobile-first experiences.”

Snapchat’s in-house AI image generation tool is months away

Snap is planning to bring this text-to-image model into production in the coming months. This in-house technology is going to power many key Snapchat features like AI Snaps and AI Bitmoji Backgrounds. Notably, Snapchat will also be able to offer more unique features to its users using the in-house text-to-image generation technology. It will not have to rely on third-party AI image generation tools anymore.
