Scammers Are Now Targetting IPhone Users Via The Apple IMessage App
Contents
Apple proudly claims that iPhone users globally consider iMessage to be one of the most secure SMS services. More than 8 billion iPhone users across the world reportedly use the app. It offers strong built-in phishing protection, which disables links in messages received from unknown senders. However, now there’s a new scam where tricksters have found a way to target Apple iPhone users by sending fake messages on the iMessage app.
Scammers are sending fake messages to Apple iPhone users to exploit their data
According to a report by BleepingComputer, iMessage users have recently been getting many fake messages containing phishing links. They trick users into replying to a message, which enables malware-based links that steal personal user data.
Notably, this is a trick that scammers have learned on how to make you disable such protections. Experts call these attacks “smishing” attacks, a combination of “SMS” and “phishing.” Some of these tricky messages disguise themselves as a notice of a “failed” UPS delivery notification.
If you fall for the trick, scammers will quickly flood your iPhone with other scam messages in the Apple iMessage app. The report claims that the trick has been in use over the past year. However, its usage has been increasing in frequency since last summer.
How can you protect yourself?
The best way to protect yourself from these scams is not to fall for the trick. Remember that you should always contact banks or any institution directly if you think someone has scammed you.
Also, if someone has already tricked you, the best thing to do is block the email address or phone number that is trying to scam you. That said, remember not to enter your credit card or other sensitive information in iMessage or in any link that you’ve received in any messaging app.
