Summary

  • A report confirms Samsung will use the Exynos 2500 chip in the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7.
  • This will be the first time the company will use an Exynos SoC inside its Flip foldable.
  • The new Exynos chip will sport a 10-core CPU on a 3nm node and an Xclipse 950 GPU.

Samsung has always used Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon chipset inside its foldables. Rumors, however, suggest the Galaxy Z Flip 7 might buck the trend, switching to the company’s in-house Exynos 2500. While there have been several contradicting reports about the Flip 7’s chipset of choice, a new leak “confirms” Samsung will use the Exynos 2500 on its upcoming flagship foldable.

SamMobile sources confirm that Samsung will equip the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with an Exynos 2500 chip in India, South Korea, and “most countries.” The report indicates the company might use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC inside the Flip 7 variants sold in China and the US.

However, Samsung has never followed a dual-SoC strategy for its foldable phones, and it may not do so for the Z Flip 7 either. With the flip foldable unlikely to ship in large volumes, it’s hard to justify Samsung investing heavily in a dual-SoC approach. So, the Flip 7 will likely use the same Exynos chip in all markets where it goes up for sale, including the US.

A Korean report from late April earlier this year also suggested the same. It claimed Samsung will use the Exynos 2500 inside the Flip 7 despite the poor yields of the chip due to cost reasons. The phone’s limited shipment volume will help ensure there are no supply bottlenecks. Apparently, switching to Exynos will help Samsung save a considerable sum of money.

Samsung’s next-gen Exynos SoC will be fabricated on a 3nm node

The Exynos 2500 carries the model number S5E9955 and will be fabricated on Samsung’s 3nm node. It will supposedly pack a 10-core CPU, with a Prime Cortex-X925 core clocked at 3.3GHz. Other CPU cores include 2x Cortex-A725 running at 2.75GHz, 5x Cortex-A725 clocked at 2.36GHz, and 2x low-power Cortex-A520 at 1.8GHz. This will be paired with an AMD RDNA 3.5 architecture-based Xclipse 950 GPU.

Samsung’s Exynos chips are infamous for thermal issues and subpar performance. This year, it’s the Snapdragon 8 Elite that tends to heat up quickly under load. So, Samsung’s decision to go with the 3nm Exynos 2500 inside the Flip 7 might just pay off.

The Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 should go official in early July alongside One UI 8.
