Samsung Wallet’s Digital Key has been steadily growing, allowing users to access their vehicles without a physical key. Volvo and Polestar are now on Samsung Wallet’s access list, with select models compatible.
Digital Key is Samsung’s answer to keyless vehicle access. Unlike a touchless payment, the access point (vehicle) needs to be compatible. This means that manufacturers need to work with Samsung to make it possible for their vehicles to be opened with a Galaxy phone or watch. This takes time, and when it happens, not all models are accessible right away.
Samsung just announced that the Digital Key in Samsung Wallet will now work with select Volvo and Polestar vehicles, the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90. The new access means that users with Galaxy devices can unlock the Polestar 3 and Volvo EX90 without a physical fob.
Digital Key uses UWB, NFC, and BLE to unlock and start paired vehicles without a key. The keys meet EAL6+ certification to prevent unauthorized access. In some ways, it’s more secure than a physical key. One of the best features is the ability to remotely lock or delete keys via Samsung Find, just in case something happens.
Samsung does not note when other vehicles like the Polestar 4 and the upcoming Polestar 5 will see access to Digital Key, though it might not be very long. Generally, its much more of a hurdle working with the manufacturer itself rather than rolling out incremental access to individual models.
Volvo and Polestar aren’t the first to gain access via Digital Key, and they likely won’t be the last.
