Summary

  • Galaxy Z Flip 7 to be the first foldable with Samsung’s Exynos chip.
  • It will supposedly use the Exynos 2500 SoC due to cost reasons, despite yield being below 60%.
  • Samsung will apparently stick to the Snapdragon 8 Elite for the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

Samsung has typically dual-sourced Exynos and Snapdragon SoCs for its flagship Galaxy S lineup. But for its foldable phones, the company has always used Qualcomm’s latest and greatest chip. This year’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 might buck that trend, becoming the first foldable in the company’s history to launch with an Exynos 2500 chip.

A report from Korean publication ChosunBiz claims Samsung has finalized its in-house Exynos 2500 SoC for the Galaxy Z Flip 7. The flip foldable will apparently enter mass production in May, with around 200,000 units to be produced in the initial batch.

So far, rumors around the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s chipset have been mixed, though most pointed to Samsung sticking with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite. The company could not proceed with using the 3nm Exynos 2500 due to yield issues. Instead, it planned to equip its upcoming FE flip foldable with an Exynos chip.

However, it seems Samsung’s foundry division has resolved the yield problems, paving the way for the company to equip the Galaxy Z Flip 7 with the chip. Citing an industry source, the report states that Samsung opted for its in-house Exynos chip largely due to cost reasons, despite the yield not reaching 60%.

Since the Exynos 2500 is an in-house chip, it will apparently cost the company considerably less than the Snapdragon 8 Elite. Qualcomm also hiked the prices of its flagship AP this year by 20%, making it even more expensive.

The limited shipments of the flip phone will also ensure that the Exynos 2500’s low yields won’t cause any major issues.

Galaxy Z Flip 7 may not pack any major upgrades

Samsung is supposedly sticking to Qualcomm’s flagship chipset for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which will pack bigger upgrades this year than its Flip sibling. Leaked Galaxy Z Flip 7 renders suggest that it will retain largely the same design as its predecessor, albeit with larger inner and outer displays.

Typically, Samsung’s Exynos chips are not as fast or efficient as Qualcomm’s SoCs. But even if the Exynos 2500 proves to be more power-hungry, the Galaxy Z Flip 7 is reportedly expected to come with a larger 4,300mAh battery, which should offset the increased power consumption.
