Despite offering some magnetic accessories, Samsung hasn’t spent any time talking about the Galaxy S25 series being ready for Qi2. Yet, the Galaxy S25 series is the first set of smartphones with Qi 2.1 support, but without any upgrades to charging speed.
As detailed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Samsung’s Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra are the first Qi 2.1 devices, and join only the HMD Skyline in supporting Qi 2.0.0 and higher on Android. Most other Android smartphones, even recent releases, are still using Qi 1.3.3.
However, this upgrade to Qi 2.1.0 comes without support for the “Magnetic Power Profile,” as in Samsung’s new phones do lack built-in magnets. Qi 2.1 is, notably, the newest version of the Qi standard. It was announced at CES 2025 and brings support for “Qi2 Ready,” an “extension” of Qi2 which allows smartphone manufacturers to offload the magnets to a case rather than building them into the smartphone itself, as is required for the original “Qi2” branding.
So what’s the benefit of adopting Qi 2.1.0 in the Galaxy S25 series?
For now, there’s not much. Samsung is leveraging this updated standard to sell its own magnet cases which give customers an official way to use Qi2 and MagSafe accessories with perfect coil alignment. This also extends to some third-party brands.
There’s also no immediate charging speed boost. The WPC lists the Galaxy S25 series with 15W maximum charging speeds, meaning that’s what you’ll get out of most wireless chargers, even if they have the magnetic alignment.
That’s not to say this is the actual max power Samsung’s phones can accept via wireless charging. The iPhone 16 series supports up to 25W charging through select accessories, but the WPC similarly lists Apple’s devices with 15W maximum charging speeds. However, this will require accessories that can both put out that amount of power, and support whatever changes Samsung has made to allow for that to happen. The company previously listed multiple magnetic wireless charging accessories on its website, but has since removed them. 25W charging speeds weren’t mentioned for the Galaxy S25 with those accessories when they were listed for sale.
