Samsung Galaxy S24 & Galaxy S24+: Everything You Need To Know

UPDATE (December 31, 2024): The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ have started receiving the satellite messaging option on T-Mobile. Read more about it at the very end of the article.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ launched alongside the ‘Ultra’ model. We’ll cover the Galaxy S24 Ultra in a separate article. Here, we’re focusing on the vanilla Galaxy S24 and the ‘Plus’ variant. In this article, you’ll get plenty of information about both of those devices. We’ll touch upon everything ranging from the specs and cost to colors and new features. The availability info is also included below, and much more than that. With that in mind, we’ll kick things off with their specifications, and take it from there.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ have some specs in common, but there’s quite a bit different here, actually. That’s why we’ll talk about either phone separately below, so that you can get a good look at what they offer, spec-wise.

Galaxy S24 specs:

The Samsung Galaxy S24 features a 6.2-inch fullHD+ (2340 x 1080) display. That is a Dynamic AMOLED 2x panel. It’s a Super Smooth display with an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz). It’s also flat, by the way. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 fuels the Galaxy S24 in some (most) markets, while the Exynos 2400 is used in others (Europe). Samsung opted to offer only an 8GB LPDDR5X RAM model of the Galaxy S24. That model does come in two flavors, though, with either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 4.0 flash storage.

There is a 4,000mAh battery included here, and it supports 25W charging. Do note that the adapter is not included in the box, though. Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 (15W) is also included, as is Wireless PowerShare (reverse wireless charging). Android 14 comes pre-installed with Samsung’s One UI 6.1 skin. Wi-Fi 6E is supported, as is Bluetooth 5.3. This handset is IP68 certified for water and dust resistance.

There are three cameras on the back here. A 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.8 aperture, OIS, 85-degree FoV) is backed by a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (f/2.2 aperture, 120-degree FoV). A 10-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4 aperture, 3x optical zoom, 36-degree FoV) is also placed on the back. A 12-megapixel selfie camera (f/2.2 aperture, 80-degree FoV) can be found on the front. The Galaxy S24 measures 147 x 70.6 x 7.6mm, while it weighs 167 grams.

Galaxy S24+ specs:

The Galaxy S24+, on the other hand, has a 6.7-inch QHD+ (3120 x 1440) Dynamic AMOLED 2x display. This panel is also flat, and it’s also a ‘Super Smooth’ panel with a 120Hz refresh rate. Do note that the refresh rate is adaptive, though, it goes from 1 to 120Hz. This phone is fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 in most markets, while the Exynos 2400 takes over in others (Europe). The phone comes with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Two UFS 4.0 flash storage variants are on offer, a 256GB model and a 512GB model.

The Galaxy S24+ has a 4,900mAh battery and supports 45W wired charging, Unfortunately, a charger is not included here either. Fast Wireless Charging 2.0 (15W) is on offer too, as is Wireless PowerShare (reverse wireless charging). Android 14 comes pre-installed with One UI 6.1. This phone is also IP68 certified for water and dust resistance, while it supports Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E, just like its sibling.

The camera setup is the same as on the Galaxy S24. There is a 50-megapixel main camera (f/1.8 aperture, OIS, 85-degree FoV), a 12-megapixel ultrawide unit (f/2.2 aperture, 120-degree FoV), and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4 aperture, 3x optical zoom, 36-degree FoV). A 12-megapixel front-facing camera (f/2.2 aperture, 80-degree FoV) is also a part of the package. The Galaxy S24+ measures 158.5 x 75.9 x 7.7mm and weighs 196 grams.

What new upgrades do the Galaxy S24 & Galaxy S24+ have over the Galaxy S23 & Galaxy S23+?

The entire Galaxy S24 series brings various upgrades compared to their predecessors. What about the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ specifically? Well, we’ll talk about some of the most notable changes below. Do note that many more have been made, though.

Galaxy AI editing tools

The Galaxy S24 series is packed with Galaxy AI editing tools. Simple tools such as erase, re-compose, and remaster are available. On top of that, Edit Suggestion uses Galaxy AI to suggest “perfectly suitable tweaks for each photo”. Generative Edit, on the other hand, can fill in parts of an image background with generative AI.

Nightography

Samsung has upgraded the Nithography shooting on the entire Galaxy S24 series. The ‘Ultra’ model does come with bigger pixels, but some improvements have been added to the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+. Both smartphones come with “upgraded Nightography capabilities”, and by that, we believe Samsung means software, as the company didn’t really explain itself.

ProVisual Engine

Samsung’s ProVisual Engine is basically a set of AI-powered tools that can improve your images. What stands out here, at least in our opinion, is AI Zoom. Samsung will apply this feature to distances between digital zoom lengths in order to provide the best image possible. Results may vary, though, of course.

Instant Slow-mo

If you love those super slow-motion videos, you’ll be glad to see Instant Slow-mo on the Galaxy S24 Ultra. This feature can generate additional frames based on movements in order to not only slow down a video but also make it seem very smooth in the process. That’s the problem with slow motion sometimes, the video ends up looking choppy after it’s fired up. That should not be the case here.

Live Translate

We’ve highlighted the Live Translate feature here for a reason, even though One UI 6.1 does bring a bunch of new software features. Live Translate allows you to use two-way, real-time voice and text translation services during voice calls. Well, as long as you’re using the default phone app, of course. This can be particularly handy if you’re traveling abroad.

Interpreter, Chat Assist & more software features

In addition to Live Translate, Samsung presented a bunch of other features. We’ll talk about some of them here. The Interpreter can translate live conversations on a split-screen view. Chat Assist can improve your conversational tone and your communication in general. Note Assist is a feature available in Samsung Notes, and it provides AI-generated summaries, template creation, and cover creation. Transcript Assist also leverages AI and speech-to-text technology in order to transcribe, summarize, and translate recordings.

What cases are available for the Galaxy S24 & Galaxy S24+?

Samsung has a wide range of accessories available via its official website. Those are mostly cases, official ones, and unofficial ones sold directly by Samsung. The ‘Shield Case’ for both devices is now available for $27.99 (S24 / S24+). If you’re more interested in the ‘Vegan Leather case, it can be yours for $47.99 (S24 / S24+). The Galaxy S24/S24+ ‘S-View Wallet Case’ is priced at $39.99 (S24 / S24+), while the ‘Clear Gadget Case’ costs $39.99 (S24 / S24+). There are plenty more choices to go over for both the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ via the links below. You’ll find more than one color option for most of the cases listed at Samsung.com.

Should I buy the Galaxy S24 or Galaxy S24+?

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ are not huge improvements over their Galaxy S23 siblings. Well, at least on paper. They just launched, so we’ll share far more information in our review. If you’re looking to upgrade from last year’s models, chances are that won’t be necessary. If you do own an older device, getting one of these two handsets may not be a bad idea. The Galaxy S24 is one of the most compelling compact Android devices on the market, even though it’s larger than its predecessor. The Galaxy S24+ is a great alternative to the Galaxy S24 Ultra if you’re not looking to spend the additional cash and don’t need the S Pen.
