Project Orion Is Now “Cyberpunk 2” As It Moves Into Pre-Production

Cyberpunk 2 is the official name (at least internally) for the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red, and its development has now reportedly moved beyond just the conceptual stages. For fans of Cyberpunk 2077, this is good news, as it means things are moving right along and it’s one step closer to the game being released.

CD Projekt Red confirmed details about Cyberpunk 2 as part of its annual earnings report on May 29, 2025. In addition to Cyberpunk 2 information, CDPR also announced other key highlights, like the 10th Anniversary of The Witcher 3 coming up, a game which has now also sold over 60 million copies worldwide across all platforms. The studio also saw fit to call attention to the release of Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition, which is releasing for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5.

Cyberpunk 2 development is now in the pre-production phase

While it’s great that the game has now made it to a pre-production phase, Cyberpunk 2 development is still in the very early stages and is likely years away. The Witcher 4 is most certainly CDPR’s next big game to release, and it’s not coming anytime soon, which puts the launch of Cyberpunk 2 well in the future. That being said, this will hopefully give the development team all the time they need to make sure the game is a hit at launch. The last thing CDPR (and the fans) want is another launch like Cyberpunk 2077. No doubt, fans and critics will be watching closely to see how the game lands.

While we don’t have any confirmation about a release date, CDPR did say that the game will launch “in due time.” Which is basically saying it’ll be ready when it’s ready. It’s also unclear if Cyberpunk 2 will be the official name of the game when it comes out.

CDPR officially refers to it as now being called Cyberpunk 2 instead of Project Orion. However, it never says that this is the game’s official title. So, this does leave one to wonder if this is just CDPR’s internal reference for it or if this is what it will be called at launch.
