Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold was a drastic improvement over its predecessor, and simply an excellent foldable when it debuted last year. One of the only core complaints, though, was the downgraded camera hardware compared to the rest of the company’s “Pro” phones. According to a new leak, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold will still not quite match the rest of the Pro series, but it’s still apparently getting a camera upgrade.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has five cameras in total. Two 10.8MP (cropped from 11MP) front-facing selfie cameras in the two displays, and two 12MP sensors used for ultrawide and telephoto (5x) lenses. Then, a 48MP camera (cropped down from a 64MP sensor) serves as the main lens, and also the main point of controversy compared to the rest of the lineup.
Pixel 9 Pro and Pro XL both utilize considerably better camera hardware compared to the Fold, and it seems the same will be true of the upcoming Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
Android Authority reports that Google is making some changes to the camera hardware across the Pixel 10 series. The Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL aren’t changing, apparently, but the base model will drop from matching the same main sensor down to hardware first found in the Pixel 9a.

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s cameras will apparently also come from Pixel 9a.
The report claims that the majority of the Fold’s camera hardware isn’t changing. The same front-facing cameras, the same ultrawide and telephoto cameras. The only thing changing is the main sensor, ditching the Sony IMX787 that first launched in the Pixel 7a for a Samsung GN8, the same sensor found in the Pixel 9a and, apparently, the base Pixel 10. It’s unclear whether or not the 50MP sensor will be cropped for the Fold, as the existing Sony sensor is cropped from its 64MP sensor size down to 48MP.
It remains to be seen how this sensor performs, especially with rumors of a fully custom ISP coming with Tensor G5, but it’s a bit of a shame to see that Google won’t be addressing this key complaint on its foldable. Even with that in mind, though, Google’s cameras already deliver some of the best shots on foldables just thanks to the processing, as we discussed last year.
