Overwhelmed By Gemini AI Models? Google Just Made It Easier

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by the Gemini model selection on the web? You’re not alone. Google seems to be listening and has rolled out a cleaner, more straightforward way to pick your AI brain. They’ve updated Gemini’s model picker, aiming to simplify things for users who found the previous menu a tad… busy.

If you’re rocking a Gemini Advanced subscription, you’ll now see a trimmed-down list of four key options when you head to the web’s model selector:

  • 2.0 Flash: Fast all-around help
  • 2.5 Flash (preview): Our next reasoning model built for speed
  • 2.5 Pro (preview): Reasoning, math & code
  • 2.0 Flash with Search history: Personalized to you

This should make it easier to choose the ideal model for you. After all, having four options with concise descriptions seems like a better way to showcase the main models and their capabilities.

Interestingly, options like “Deep Research with 2.5 Pro” and “Veo 2” have been moved out of the main dropdown. You can now find them directly in the prompt bar (via by 9to5Google). Plus, “Veo 2” has been renamed to the more descriptive “Video,” and the Canvas option has a fresh new icon there too.

If you’re on a desktop with a wider screen, you’ll see all three of these options. Meanwhile, mobile web users will find them tucked away under a three-dot overflow button. For now, it looks like the Gemini apps on Android and iOS haven’t seen any changes yet.

Once the 2.5 Flash and Pro versions are out of preview, the 2.0 Flash option will probably disappear. The ultimate goal? Integrating the “personalized” mode across all models. This simpler model selection on the web should make it easier for everyone to tap into Gemini’s power without getting lost in a sea of options. So, more people could see themselves encouraged to finally jump on the AI bandwagon.
