OpenAI Wants ChatGPT To Be Your Life Assistant — Not Just A Chatbot

OpenAI is aiming to transform ChatGPT into a “super assistant” that could replace many of Google’s core services, according to a leaked internal strategy document discussed during the Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google. The company’s goal is for ChatGPT to become the default personal assistant on every device, offering both broad everyday help and deep expertise—potentially challenging not just Google, but also rivals like Perplexity and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving AI space.
Google’s services like Android, search, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, and Workspace are a huge part of our online lives. But now it seems that OpenAI wants to take Google’s place. During the Justice Department’s antitrust case against Google, an internal file called “ChatGPT: H1 2025 Strategy” reveals OpenAI’s plans to make ChatGPT the “super assistant” of your life.
ChatGPT, your everyday super assistant
It’s no secret that ChatGPT is slowly replacing traditional search. After all, why use Google to search for things manually when ChatGPT can pull up answers for you on the spot? Need more info? Just ask ChatGPT to explain it further to you. No need to go clicking through websites to find what you need.
This is why OpenAI envisions a future where ChatGPT can become your everyday super assistant. According to the document, “In the first half of next year, we’ll start evolving ChatGPT into a super-assistant: one that knows you, understands what you care about, and helps with any task that a smart, trustworthy, emotionally intelligent person with a computer could do.”
So, what is a “super assistant”? According to OpenAI’s description, “It’s an intelligent entity with T-shaped skills. It’s an entity because it’s personalized to you and available anywhere you go — including chatgpt.com, our native apps, phone, email, or third-party surfaces like Siri. It’s T-shaped because it has broad skills for daily tasks that are tedious, and deep expertise for tasks that most people find impossible (starting with coding). The broad part is all about making life easier: answering a question, finding a home, contacting a lawyer, joining a gym, planning vacations, buying gifts, managing calendars, keeping track of todos, sending emails.”
OpenAI wants ChatGPT to be everyone’s default
The document also reveals OpenAI’s plans and hopes to make ChatGPT the default assistant on your devices. Right now, OpenAI and Apple have a partnership. Users can choose to use OpenAI to handle more complex Apple Intelligence tasks. It also has dedicated apps on iOS and Android.
However, OpenAI wants users to be able to make ChatGPT the default. For example, on iOS, ChatGPT is a fallback AI. This means that if Siri can’t handle the task, it will turn to ChatGPT. However, Siri is still the default assistant on iOS. OpenAI says that companies “shouldn’t push their own AIs without giving users fair alternatives.”
That being said, will the day come when ChatGPT dominates the internet? Right now, the AI space is rife with competition. While ChatGPT is probably the most well-known, there are other AI models from Perplexity and Anthropic that are just as powerful.
