Don’t snap the pass just yet. This push into live programming is more than spectacle. Netflix is doubling down on its ad-supported tier, which now hits more than 94 million monthly active users around the globe. According to President of Advertising Amy Reinhard, viewers in the US are watching 41 hours a month, and there’s strong engagement even during mid-roll ads.

Netflix is sweetening the deal for advertisers by announcing its Ads Suite platform is now live in the US and Canada. It plans to expand the platform to Europe by June. This platform gives advertisers first-party data integration, programmatic buying, and generative AI powers (of course). That’s a whole lot of flying elbows.

There’s more to it than live programming. Netflix announced an entire roster of upcoming content, including:

  • Stranger Things: Tales from ’85
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2
  • Bridgerton season 4
  • Emily in Paris season 5
  • Love is Blind season 9
  • Squid Game season 3
  • The Witcher season 4

There is also a slate of new movies and shows featuring stars like Denzel Washington and Jamie Foxx. And yes, a reboot of Star Search is coming, too.

It’s clear Netflix has the ball and is rushing. Between an aggressive move into live content and its growing ad business, the company is stepping in between the ropes with something to prove.
