One UI 8 Is Still Pending, But One UI 8.5 Is Already In Development

Summary: Samsung appears determined to avoid the delays users have experienced with the One UI 7 rollout. The company is reportedly already working on One UI 8.5 for the Galaxy S26 series. The update was spotted in strings and will be the next update to One UI 8.0.
It’s clear that One UI 7 development has been painfully slow. Plus, the initial rollout was slightly delayed due to some issues, which further frustrated users. However, the latest rumors suggest that the situation will be very different for upcoming updates. According to a new report, Samsung is already working on One UI 8.5 for a release alongside the Galaxy S26 series.
One UI 7’s long development time forced Samsung to make some decisions. For example, everything indicates that there won’t be an intermediate update for One UI 7. Instead, the company will directly release the Android 16-based One UI 8 sometime in H2 2025 alongside its next-gen foldables. The next step after that could be One UI 8.5.
One UI 8.5 for the Samsung Galaxy S26 series spotted
As reported by Sammy Police, Samsung is already working on the One UI 8.5 update and is expected to debut it with the Galaxy S26 lineup. The outlet found strings with direct references to “One UI 8.5,” which makes it clear that the company seems to have already decided on the name of the update following One UI 8.0. While the source specifically mentions the Galaxy S26 Ultra, the firmware will likely be available on all devices in the series. However, the S26 Ultra model may have some exclusive features.
It’s notable that Samsung hasn’t released a “.5” update since 2020. The company had been releasing intermediate updates under build numbers like “.1” or “.1.1.” Updates with “.5” indicate more substantial changes and improvements in the form of new features. According to leaks, One UI 8.0 will be a fairly continuous update. So, Samsung could be saving the biggest improvements for One UI 8.5—which will still be based on Android 16.
Regarding One UI 8.0, Samsung wouldn’t take that long to develop it. The firm completed all the heavy lifting in One UI 7. Let’s hope that’s true and the situation isn’t as bizarre as that of the Android 15-based update for Galaxy devices.
