Samsung’s Galaxy devices follow a strict set of events when the battery drops too low. That process includes dimming the screen to around 5%, which makes the phone a little hard to use. In the latest version of One UI 7, Galaxy phones can now disable that auto dim feature altogether.
Android phones, as a whole, have a few implementations to combat battery drain. Most devices will want you when the battery is draining at around 20%. At that point, the phone will usually suggest that you turn the battery saver on to maintain a slow drain. On Galaxy devices, getting down to 5% means that the screen goes dark in an attempt to reserve some power for needed actions. It does save power, but it also makes the phone hard to use.
In the latest version of One UI 7, Samsung has added a setting that adjusts the phone’s behavior at 5%. It can be found in Settings > Battery > Auto dim screen (via SamMobile). Turning the toggle off on this option will disable the One UI 7 auto dim function. While the function can be useful for saving power, the way it’s implemented can be a little overkill.
In the Galaxy S25 series, Samsung claims to have made some changes in how power is managed. Though the cell sizes haven’t changed since last year, it sounds like Samsung is expecting the phones to last longer in daily use. Getting down to 5% is hard enough, but auto dim almost makes it worse.
One UI 7 will be coming to Galaxy S24 devices sometime soon. The Galaxy S25 series comes with the newest OS pre-installed, with pre-order shipments happening early.
