NVIDIA Says RTX 50-Series Laptops Won’t Have The Missing ROPs Glitch

NVIDIA’s RTX 50-series launch has not been the company’s smoothest, but at least the hardware glitch impacting the desktop GPUs won’t impact the mobile versions of these GPUs in gaming laptops. NVIDIA has stated that the missing ROPs glitch in some of its RTX 50-series desktop GPUs, won’t be present in the mobile versions.

If that’s true, then gaming laptop buyers should end up getting all of the performance those GPUs are designed to offer. According to a recent report from The Verge, it is true. The Verge reportedly spoke with NVIDIA’s GeForce Global PR Director Ben Barraondo and asked about the glitch. NVIDIA confirmed twice that the laptop versions of its new GPUs would encounter the same problem.

The glitch refers to a problem with the RTX 5070 Ti, RTX 5080, and RTX 5090. In these cards, there’s a hardware flaw where some of the ROPs are missing. As Techradar notes, there are 8 of the ROPs missing from these cards. This affects performance, though it may be somewhat negligible, depending on the game, as not all games will use the same amount of ROPs.

It’s also worth noting that NVIDIA says only 0.5% of the desktop GPUs have this glitch. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t a big problem.

NVIDIA says partners continue to run checks on laptops for the RTX 50-series ROPs glitch

According to reports, NVIDIA’s laptop partners continue to run checks as part of testing to ensure the laptop GPUs aren’t encountering this issue. All of this comes after two reports came out earlier this week about the laptop GPUs missing ROPs just like their desktop counterparts. NVIDIA has since spoken to both of those publications and confirmed with the same answer. No RTX 50-series laptop GPUs have this glitch. The original reports come from heise online and hardware LUXX.

The laptops may see a delay in shipping

While NVIDIA’s confirmation that the laptop GPUs don’t have the same glitch as the desktop GPUs is refreshing to hear, these extra checks may have pushed back their launch. Hardware LUXX mentions that the laptops may be delayed, with units possibly not shipping until April. That’s probably not what consumers who pre-ordered want to hear. But a delay is better than dealing with lost performance due to faulty hardware.
