Summary

  • Shield TV users receive updated release 9.2.1 with various bug fixes from a previous hotfix.
  • Update includes fixes for Dolby Vision, Plex playback, and other connection issues.
  • New release prioritizes stability and performance enhancements over new features.

If you don’t follow Nvidia and its Shield TV updates closely, then you may not have noticed that the company loves to release opt-in hotfixes for its major updates. Basically, things can break with new Shield Experience Upgrades, but not for every Shield user, since there are so many variables to a home entertainment system. For those who are affected by bugs or breakages, these hotfixes come in clutch as they arrive much sooner than stable updates, which is why they are opt-in; they aren’t tested as diligently.

Well, last month’s hotfix is today’s full-fledged update, going from version 33.2.0.322 to 33.2.0.326. This update brings with it many of the hotfixes we saw last month, but now these resolved bugs are being pushed to all Shield TVs.

What’s new with Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.1

Forget hotfixes, it’s time for a stable update

Now that hotfix users have had a chance to test Nvidia’s 33.2.0.322 update, things have progressed to version 33.2.0.326 with the launch of the Shield Experience Upgrade 9.2.1, and the bugfixes found in last month’s hotfix are here in today’s stable release, just as promised. This means all Shield users can expect fixes for stuttering Dolby Vision content, Plex playback issues, and connection issues with third-party remotes. Below you can read the full changelog.

Upgraded Apps:

  • Support to stream games on NVIDIA GeForce NOW at 120FPS up to 1080p resolution. GeForce NOW Ultimate membership required.

Resolved Bugs:

  • Fixes night mode being skipped when DAP is ON.
  • Fixes Dolby Vision content stutters when frame match feature is enabled.
  • Fixes match content audio resolution while using an USB DAC.
  • Adds back HQS / Maxrate option for USB audio.
  • USB TV Tuner fix with Live Channel app.
  • Fixes playback issues in PLEX when using AAC 5.1 audio.
  • Fixes connection issues with third-party remotes after sleep or reboot.

If you compare this to the hotfix dropped last month, you’ll see that there is one extra line in today’s update, the fixes for connection issues with third-party remotes, which is assuredly welcome if you’ve been suffering from remote connection issues. Of course, 9.2.1 is only a point upgrade over the major 9.2 update we received in February, so there are no major feature drops this time around. Nope, today’s update is all about stability and better performance, no matter if you stream movies and TV or video games with GeForce NOW.

So, if your Shield TV has yet to alert you to the 9.2.1 update that’s currently rolling out, you should see it soon. And remember, this is all thanks to Nvidia’s continued support of the Shield TV platform. The product line is now ten years old, putting Google’s and Samsung’s seven years of support to shame. Way to go, Nvidia; keep the updates coming!
