In addition to “Sleep insights & tips,” Fitbit Labs is preparing a new opt-in “Sleep need” experiment that will find your “ideal bedtime and wake times.”
About APK Insight: In this “APK Insight” post, we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that Google uploaded to the Play Store. When we decompile these files (called APKs, in the case of Android apps), we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. We’ll try to enable those that are closer to being finished, however, to show you how they’ll look in case that they do ship. With that in mind, read on.
Fitbit will create a “personalized sleep schedule.”
Share a few details throughout the day, and let Fitbit Labs work out your ideal bedtime and wake times
This Sleep Lab — or “Sleep need labs” — has three aspects:
- “Each day, answer a few questions about how you feel at different times”
- “Fitbit uses your responses, and your sleep data, to work out the sleep you need each night”
- “You’ll get a personalized bedtime and wake time recommendation to help you get the sleep you need”
There are Morning, Midday, and Evening surveys, with the middle one asking about your “energy levels.” You’ll also get a “reminder 1 hour before scheduled bedtime,” with a suggestion to use Android’s Digital Wellbeing Bedtime mode.
Fitbit will note “How much sleep you need” and “This is the sleep you missed” (or sleep debt), with an explanation of how everything was calculated.
Once a Bedtime and Wake time are generated, Fitbit will “suggest you edit you[r] alarms to reflect the changes.” Fitbit recommends that you “Wear your device for at least 5 days to see more accurate sleep need and sleep debt data.”
We’re seeing these Sleep need Lab strings with version 4.37 of Fitbit for Android. This is not yet live in the app. Tap the account menu in the top-right corner for Fitbit Labs to check availability.
