Motorola’s Perplexity AI Gamble Could Change How You Use Your Phone

The 2025 Motorola Razr smartphones will feature deep Perplexity AI integration that goes beyond basic AI functions. Users can access comprehensive assistant features directly from the external display while the phone is folded shut, allowing for information retrieval, email sending, ride booking, and restaurant reservations without even opening the device.
Earlier this week, Motorola announced the 2025 Razr series of smartphones and confirmed that they would all come with Perplexity AI integration. At a surface level, this might seem like a minor thing and an attempt from Motorola to stuff its phone with features it doesn’t need, but it’s actually a really smart move.
In our report from earlier this week, we talked about how it isn’t a bad thing that Motorola has “loaded its phone with AI.” This partnership with Perplexity extends beyond shoving another AI tool into the phone that you may or may not use. And the integration is likely to be deeper than you realized, all with a singular goal. Providing you, the user, with the best tool for the job to help with almost any task.
Perplexity AI will function on the Motorola Razr’s external display when folded shut
This is perhaps one of the biggest benefits of Perplexity being available on the Razr 2025. While there are some features that were already accessible on these external displays, none of them really have the same usefulness as Perplexity will. Simply because Perplexity will do a lot more than just grab the information you’re seeking.
Perplexity AI on the Motorola Razr will be able to do everything from sending emails to requesting a ride through apps like Uber and Lyft. Perplexity even confirms that a lot of its integration on the Razr is customised for Motorola’s hardware. This includes the “Perplexity Assistant that extends beyond just information retrieval, allowing users to send emails, set smart reminders, play media, request rides, and book restaurant reservations,” the company says.
Think about how useful it will be to not only have an AI tool on your phone that you can ask questions to and have a conversation with, but also give it tasks like ordering you an Uber home or having it send that email response. All from the external display, while the phone is folded closed, no less.
Moto AI ties it all together
Having Perplexity AI on the device is already a benefit that you won’t get on many other phones. As of yet. It gets better, though, as Motorola is tying everything together with Moto AI. Moto AI, as the name suggests, is Motorola’s own in-house AI software. It basically directs you to the AI tool that’s best-suited for the job. You can also use it to launch into Perplexity directly by typing “Ask Perplexity.” This gives you an easy way to get right to Perplexity’s features without having to look for and launch the app yourself. What’s more, Perplexity doesn’t only provide search results. It’s also your full-blown assistant thanks to everything it can do on the phone.
All of Motorola’s 2025 phones get Perplexity Pro
Alongside having Perplexity available to use on the device, there’s also a neat little bonus. Anyone who buys a 2025 Motorola phone from the Razr and Edge 60 series. You’ll get access to Perplexity Pro. The company says that users will get access to it for free for a period of three months. So, you won’t get the Pro version at no cost forever. That being said, 90 days of access without paying for it is a lot of time. It should be enough time to decide if it’s worth keeping the subscription.
With the Pro version of Perplexity AI, you get a whole lot more functionality out of an AI tool that’s already pretty powerful. For example, you can choose from a few different advanced AI models for various uses. This includes GPT-4o, Claude 3.6 Sonnet, and Sonar. Additionally, there are some pro shopping features and unlimited file uploads.
Of course, the Moto Razr and Edge 60 Series devices will also have Gemini. So you get a full suite of AI tools baked right into the phone. Everything at your fingertips.
