Motorola has confirmed a delayed Razr (2025) launch at Verizon carriers while rumors swirl around devices catching on fire.
The 2025 Motorola Razr lineup launched on May 15 and was supposed to go on sale through Verizon on that date. The carrier and its MVNOs listed the device, but have since removed it. Verizon no longer lists any of the new Razr models at all on its website.
While no reason has been officially disclosed, the delay has been confirmed. In a statement to 9to5Google, Motorola says:
The availability timeline of the new motorola razr at Verizon was adjusted to ensure the best possible launch experience for their customers. It will be available at Verizon, Straight Talk, Total Wireless and Visible on May 22.
Verizon has since updated its blog post about the Razr launch with this new date.
Why the delay?
Again, there’s no official word just yet, but there are some strange rumors regarding devices potentially catching on fire. On Reddit, users report that their Razr (2025) pre-orders were effectively canceled. Shipments were requested to be returned to the sender, with delivery drivers in some cases having to refuse to deliver the package. That certainly suggests a problem on its own, but a since-deleted thread adds some potential context. A user who says that they “work in this industry” claims that there’s a “fire hazard” around these devices. Two other alleged Verizon employees claim that devices have been pulled from storefronts and are on “quarantine.”
Motorola’s statement, nor Verizon’s, addresses these rumors of devices catching on fire, but the delayed launch suggests that something far less drastic is to blame. Neither company has offered any further details yet. Fires also seem extremely unlikely given that only Verizon carriers were affected here. Motorola.com, T-Mobile, and AT&T have yet to see the same impact, though, some orders through Motorola’s own website are also apparently being canceled. Verizon, also speaking to 9to5Google, says that no phones were shipped to customers.
We’ll update this post if any further information comes to light. Our post was updated after publication to clarify that rumors of fires are not likely.
