During the Alphabet Q4 2024 earnings call, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said that some aspects of Project Mariner are coming to the Gemini app later this year.
Noting how Project Mariner can “understand and reason across information on a browser screen to complete tasks,” Pichai today said Google “expect[s] to bring features from both [Mariner + Astra] to the Gemini app later this year.”
Google previewed Mariner in December alongside Gemini 2.0. This browser agent can “understand and reason across information in your browser screen, including pixels and web elements like text, code, images and forms.” It can type, scroll, and click, with the current prototype existing as a desktop Chrome Extension.
We learned last month that Astra, with screen sharing and camera streaming, is coming to the Gemini app on Galaxy S25 and Pixel phones later this year. That Mariner tidbit is new, but we don’t know whether that’s referring to the desktop web and/or mobile app.
Meanwhile, the CEO teased Gemini 2.0 Flash hitting general availability for developers on Wednesday after launching for consumers last week. “Other model updates” were also teased tomorrow.
Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking, which debuted in late December and got an update last month, also got a mention. Pichai says Google is “working on even better thinking models and look forward to sharing those with the developer community soon.”
Asked about DeepSeek, Pichai said Gemini 2.0 Flash and Flash Thinking are “some of the most efficient models out there, including comparing to DeepSeek’s V3 and R1.”
At the top of the earnings call, Pichai said Google is “building, testing, and launching products and models faster than ever.”
