LEGO Invested Hundreds Of Millions For In-House Game Development

LEGO is one of those brands that’s tapped into just about every popular franchise out there, kind of like Fortnite, and a big part of this is through LEGO games, which may soon be developed by an in-house development team. LEGO has reportedly been bolstering its game development efforts. Specifically, by investing hundreds of millions into building up its own team of developers.

The team is now so big that it’s comprised of more than 1,800 software developers, which is said to be more than triple the amount that used to be on the team. That means LEGO used to have about 600 developers working on its digital products. That is by no means a small team. LEGO has also worked with third-party development studios for all of its games. So it did have help, as game development was previously outsourced to third-party studios.

That will apparently no longer be the case. And with a much more massive team of developers in-house, it should be able to handle pumping out its own games going forward.

LEGO will be making games via its in-house game development division

It isn’t clear if LEGO will do all of its games in-house moving forward. It’s probably safe to say that it will be doing a large number of them. Likely the majority. Engadget reports that LEGO hasn’t specified if it will stop working with third-party studios. PC Gamer reports that game development will be handled by this new division from now on.

That being said, LEGO games have been hugely popular, especially the ones that are tied to non-LEGO franchises. The LEGO Batman and LEGO Star Wars games have seen massive success. The more recently launched LEGO Fortnite has grown to 87 million players. LEGO could choose to license these franchises and still do the development of the games all on its own. However, it would make sense to have some of these games done by the teams who make the original games.

LEGO has a new game in development planned for 2026

While this isn’t going to be handled by the in-house team, at least not entirely, LEGO does appear to have a new game on the way. As revealed by Jason Schreier on the Kinda Funny GamesCast two weeks ago, TT Games (who has developed 37 LEGO games so far) has a new game in development for LEGO that is planned to release in 2026.

The game is unannounced at the moment, and it’s not clear what the game will be. With TT Games developing this title, however, it begs the question of when LEGO will start doing its own games in-house.
