Latest Galaxy Z Fold 7 Leaks Reiterate Thinner Design, Bigger Screen, And A Big S Pen Change

Samsung is shaking things up in its plans for future releases, even coming off the heels of a somewhat redundant launch event. New reports echo the sentiment that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 might not house a traditional S Pen digitizer in order to save space. The leak also suggests that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 will have a bigger screen and come in much thinner.

The foldable market is making massive improvements. Not just in the number of screen orientations available, but in how thin a foldable can actually be. The new Oppo Find N5, for example, comes in at 8.93mm when folded. That’s genuinely incredible, considering the fact that a lot of slab-style phones aren’t even that thin.

It seems Samsung is also keen to make some changes. Samsung might drop the digitizer from the Galaxy Z Fold 7 altogether according to a new leak (via ETNews). That would mean the S Pen, as we know it, would not work in the same way. Instead of interacting with that extra pen in the phone, a new S Pen design would work like the Apple Pencil, sending a signal in an electrical field.

This would theoretically save somewhere around 0.6mm in total between the two sandwiched halves of the panel when the phone is closed. The Galaxy Fold SE takes on this same characteristic and comes in at 10.6mm. Samsung seemingly isn’t happy with that thickness for the Z Fold 7, though. Samsung plans on getting the Galaxy Z Fold 7 to somewhere under 10mm.

The reports also indicate that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is going to carry a bigger 8-inch internal display with a 6.5-inch outer panel. It isn’t known if that phone will change aspect ratios, favoring something similar to the OnePlus Open or Pixel 9 Fold Pro. An 8-inch display would mean more room for multitasking and a more comfortable external display experience.

This S Pen news conveniently comes as users are expressing concern over the lack of Bluetooth in the S Pen for the Galaxy S25 Ultra. It seems the phone was ready for that capability, but the new S Pen lacks a battery for smart functions. If Samsung had begun preparations for converting the S Pen as a whole to a new tech, it would make sense that the Galaxy S25 Ultra would show signs of the change, though it still leaves a lot of users in the dust.

The Galaxy Z Foold 7 will likely launch sometime in 2025 with the new S Pen and thinner overall design. There’s no word on pricing, though we could expect a price bump with the added cost of an S Pen with AES technology.
