Android’s first security patch of the year is making its way to more Galaxy phones. As expected, the South Korean giant sent it out to its latest flagship phones first, including the Galaxy S24 series and the Galaxy Z Fold 6/Z Flip 6. Now, the Galaxy S24 FE, Galaxy S23 series, and Galaxy S21 series are receiving the January 2025 security update.
Galaxy S24 FE, S23 series and S21 series getting the January 2025 security update
The next Samsung devices receiving the latest security update include the company’s latest affordable flagship and older top-of-the-line models. Starting with the Galaxy S24 FE, SamMobile reports that the update is first reaching users in the US and Europe. It has the build number S721BXXS3AXL1 or S721USQS3AXL1, depending on the country you live in.
In the meantime, the patch for the Galaxy S23 series is now being seen on phones in India and Europe. In this case, the OTA build number is S91*BXXS7CXL2. The “*” is a character that varies by country. On the other hand, the carrier-locked Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra in the US are getting the January 2025 update under the build numbers G991USQSEGXLB, G991USQSEGXLB, and G991USQSEGXLB, respectively.
This is likely the last One UI 6 or Android 14-based update these devices will receive before the highly anticipated One UI 7 arrives. Samsung’s Android 15 update promises to bring one of the biggest UI and UX changes seen on One UI in years. The company redesigned a lot of things, made the animation engine better, and made the OS more customizable than ever. The update will also bring interesting new features, including some AI-powered ones. However, some sources claim that the best new features will arrive later in One UI 7.1.
An OTA focused on fixing vulnerabilities
The January 2025 security patch for Galaxy devices is entirely focused on fixing vulnerabilities. It includes 29 fixes contributed by Google, five of which have the “Critical” label. Samsung Mobile included 22 fixes for vulnerabilities that only affected its hardware/software. These exploits enabled remote execution of malicious code and control of notification settings.
As always, you should get a notification once the OTA is available for your device. However, you can always try a manual check from Settings > Software update > Download and install.
