Is The IPhone 17 Already Behind The Curve? Here’s What’s Missing

The Apple iPhone 17 won’t be any different than its predecessor in the RAM and chip departments, it would seem. According to a new report, the base iPhone 17 will ship with 8GB of RAM and the Apple A18 chip, just like the iPhone 16.

This information comes from Jeff Pu, a GF Securities analyst. He’s well-known in the tech world and is rarely wrong when it comes to Apple news. While the RAM situation is expected, the chip is a bit of a surprise.

The iPhone 17 will be equipped with the Apple A18 chip, unlike its siblings

The iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max are all expected to make a jump to the Apple A19 processor. They’re all expected to include 12GB of RAM as well. So, the iPhone 17 will not only be inferior in the RAM department, but the chip side of things too.

It’s also worth noting that the phone will have a larger display this time around. Apple will be increasing its size from a 6.1-inch panel to a 6.3-inch display. So it will have the same display size as the iPhone 17 Pro.

Apple was allegedly planning to include 12GB of RAM inside the base iPhone 17. However, Jeff Pu claims that the plan got scrapped, and that the device will ship with 8GB of RAM after all.

The phone could retain its 48MP camera & IP68 certification

Chances are that the phone will also retain its 48-megapixel main camera and an IP68 certification for water and dust resistance. We can’t help but wonder will the chip and RAM situation make this phone noticeably inferior to its siblings in the AI department. Will the phone be left behind in terms of some AI features, perhaps?

As a reminder, the entire iPhone 17 lineup is expected to launch in September. That’s when Apple announces its new iPhones every year. It’s worth noting that the WWDC does take place on June 9, so we could get a teaser or something of the sort. We’ll see. It’s also worth noting that the iPhone 17 series probably won’t be a part of Apple’s huge naming revamp.
