IOS 19 Might Not Bring Any Major Apple Intelligence Features

Apple Intelligence is already lagging behind the competition, and if Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman is right, iOS 19 won’t do much to change that. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman reported that Apple is unlikely to unveil any groundbreaking AI features at WWDC 2024. Instead, he says the company will likely focus on integrating existing features into more apps rather than introducing anything new.

No groundbreaking AI features

According to Gurman, “The bad news is that Apple is unlikely to unveil groundbreaking new AI features at this coming WWDC. Instead, it will likely lay out plans for bringing current capabilities to more apps.”

This isn’t exactly a surprise. Apple Intelligence, the company’s much-hyped AI efforts, has been underwhelming at best. Compared to Samsung’s Galaxy AI and Google’s Gemini, Apple’s AI feels years behind. While Samsung is pushing AI features like real-time translation and generative photo editing, and Google is integrating AI deeply into Android, Apple’s offering has remained largely unimpressive based on users’ feedback.

Some of you might also recall the news that a smarter version of Siri has been delayed further, which only adds to the concern. Apple’s virtual assistant has been the butt of jokes for years. Apple has attempted to make improvements over the years, but it doesn’t feel much has changed. While a major overhaul was reportedly in the works, it looks like users will have to wait even longer. At this point, it’s hard to be optimistic anymore.

Is Apple falling behind?

To be fair, Apple taking its time to get AI right isn’t necessarily a bad thing. The company is known for taking its time with technology before rolling it out. There’s also the argument to be made that it’s better to delay than to release something half-baked. However, there’s a fine line between patience and falling too far behind. Apple was already late to the AI race, and this latest delay doesn’t inspire confidence.

The competition isn’t waiting, either. Many of Apple’s competitors, such as Samsung and Google, are moving quickly. They are embedding AI into their products in ways that feel actually useful. If Apple keeps pushing its major AI features further down the road, it risks losing relevance in a fast-paced industry.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what Apple has in store for its users at WWDC 2025. But if Gurman’s report is accurate, don’t expect iOS 19 to be the AI breakthrough Apple fans have been hoping for.
