Instagram Launches Video-Editing App Called ‘Edits’ To Rival CapCut

ByteDance’s popular video-sharing app TikTok shut down its operations in the US on January 19. However, the app’s services are back online for several users, after some assurance from President-elect Donald Trump. In the meantime, other social networking apps like Instagram are trying to fill the void created by TikTok in the same space. Meta-owned platform recently added new features to the Reels feed. Instagram has now introduced a new video-editing app called Edits.
Instagram’s Edits app will rival CapCut, a video-editing app by TikTok owner ByteDance
Instagram’s head Adam Mosseri introduced Edits, the platform’s new video-editing app. Apart from TikTok, it looks like Instagram is also trying to compete with other apps offered by ByteDance. Instagram intends to compete with ByteDance’s CapCut, a video-editing application that went offline in the US alongside TikTok.
“There’s a lot going on right now, but no matter what happens, it’s our job to provide the best possible tools for creators,” Mosseri said in a video posted to Instagram. Mosseri claims that Edits is more than a video-editing application.
Touted to be a full suite of creative video-editing tools
According to Mosseri, Edits is a complete suite of creative tools for editing videos for social media content. It has a dedicated tab for inspiration, one for keeping track of early ideas, and a much higher-quality camera with various filters. Edits offers all the editing tools you would expect from such applications. It also allows you to share drafts with friends and other creators to get suggestions before posting the videos on Instagram and other platforms.
Instagram’s Edits also features a dedicated Insights tab, which the company promotes as “a live insights dashboard.” It is a breakdown of follower and non-follower engagement. It shows metrics that help you understand your audience better. Edits also provides editing tools that require people to use green screens and video overlays. These are very common features of the videos on TikTok.
That said, Instagram’s Edits video-editing application is currently available to pre-order on the Apple App Store. As per the listing, the app will be available to the public starting March 13, 2025. However, Mosseri confirmed that it will soon be available for download on Android as well.
