Huawei’s Patent Hints At 3D Fingerprint Scanner For Wearables

Wearables and tech product manufacturers often experiment with new technologies and get them patented. In the past, we have seen many big companies do the same. This time it’s Huawei which has patented a multi-functional 3D fingerprint scanner for its wrist-worn future wearables like smartwatches.

Huawei’s patent reveals it is working on a 3D fingerprint scanner for wrist-worn wearables

The folks over at MySmartPrice first spotted the patent, which has a few interesting details that you may have never heard of before. Firstly, the patent suggests that the entire display of the smartwatch may act as a fingerprint sensor. We can’t confirm, but it’s most likely the same technology as the in-display fingerprint sensor found in smartphones.

That’s not all; images in the patent indicate that the fingerprint scanner can register a 360-degree imprint of your finger, enabling you to perform different actions. If you swipe through the images below, you’ll also know that the 3D fingerprint scanner supports multiple gestures.

What’s more interesting is that users can register multiple fingers, enabling them to perform multiple actions using each finger. In other words, you use your thumb for back gestures, index finger for calls, and so on. Well, you get the idea, right?

You should also be able to control volume and brightness using different gestures

Speaking of gestures, you can use your fingers to control the volume and display brightness of the smartwatch. Placing the finger on the fingerprint scanner and twisting it clockwise and anti-clockwise would allow for increasing or decreasing the smartwatch’s volume and screen brightness.

We don’t know if or when Huawei is planning to integrate this tech into one of the successors of the Huawei Watch GT 5 and Watch GT 5 Pro. Much of the time the technologies that companies patent don’t see the light of day. We hope that’s not the case here.
