The Huawei Pura 80 series has been announced, spearheaded by the ‘Ultra’ model. The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra actually comes with two different lenses on top of its large periscope telephoto camera, amongst other things. It’s a very interesting camera-centric smartphone.
The Huawei Pura 80 series is now official. The company announced four smartphones this time around, the Huawei Pura 80, 80 Pro, 80 Pro+, and Pura 80 Ultra. The last one is especially interesting, needless to say, which is why we’ll put most focus on it.
The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra has two lenses on the same camera sensor
The most interesting aspect of this year’s ‘Ultra’ phone from Huawei lies in its camera setup, once again. It comes with a 1/1.28-inch periscope telephoto camera with two lenses attached to it. Yes, you read that right, it has two lenses on top of the sensor.
Thanks to this setup, you’re getting 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom
Huawei actually implemented a moving mechanism that shifts between the two lenses. That way, you get 3.7x and 9.4x optical zoom with sensor-shift OIS from the same sensor.
Thanks to that setup, you can capture shots at f/2.4 aperture with an 83mm equivalent focal length or at f/3.6 aperture with a 212mm focal length. Sounds interesting? It surely is, and nobody expected this.
A 1-inch main camera is also included
In addition to that periscope telephoto camera, a 50-megapixel main unit is included. It’s a 1-inch type RYYB sensor with variable aperture (f/1.6-f/4.0) and OIS support. Huawei boldly said that images from this camera offer 15x higher dynamic range compared to the Pura 70 Ultra.
The main camera comes with 16EV dynamic range, which is the highest of any smartphone. Thanks to that, we expect great detail in light and dark parts of images, and video too.
The third camera on the back is a 40-megapixel ultrawide unit (13mm), and then there’s a 1.5-megapixel multi-spectral color sensor. The Pura 80 series also comes with photographic styles including Nature, Film, Movie, and Cartoon presets.
A 120Hz display is included, along with a large battery and 100W charging
There is a 6.8-inch quad curved LTPO OLED display included on this phone, with a fullHD+ resolution. It offers an adaptive refresh rate (1-120Hz), and it’s protected by the second-gen Kunlun Glass. This display has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.
We don’t know what chip Huawei used, which was not mentioned. The phone includes 16GB of RAM, while 512GB and 1TB storage options are on offer. HarmonyOS 5.1 comes pre-installed, while the phone includes a 5,700mAh battery. It supports 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. The device is IP68 and IP69 certified.
The Huawei Pura 80 Ultra was announced in Black and Gold colors. Its pricing starts at CNY9,999 ($1,391). Pre-orders in China kick off today. There’s still no word on global availability.
