Since Google introduced Call Screen to the Pixel lineup, avoiding spam and scam calls has gotten a lot easier. This quick guide will explain how to turn the feature on and set it to automatically screen calls coming in.
What is Android’s Call Screen?
Google introduced Call Screen during the Google Assistant era. The feature sets out to be a middleman between you and your incoming phone calls. Instead of answering calls yourself from unknown numbers, the feature can be used to determine the purpose of the call before you waste your time.
As AI has improved, the tool has improved. Now, the AI feature can give you options to ask the caller questions that pertain to what they want based on what it thinks the call is about. For instance, if they say they’re calling to set up an appointment, the AI-suggested reply might offer up more questions about the nature of the appointment.
In all, Call Screen is a major feature of the Pixel series, and Samsung has since taken note and added similar features. Bixby Text Call can take a transcript of what the caller is saying, offering up a similar experience.
How to screen calls on Pixel and Galaxy phones
During a phone call on a Pixel device, the feature will always be available to use by default. On Galaxy phones, it goes by “Bixby Text Call.” If you’re looking to manually screen those incoming calls, you can tap the button when it appears on your phone. From there, the assistant will ask about the nature of the call, with live responses appearing on your phone.
There is also an option on Google Pixel phones that will automatically screen. The feature can be useful if you get a lot of spam. There are levels to the feature, with maximum, medium, and basic protection. Both medium and maximum protection automatically decline spam, but maximum protection will screen all unknown numbers.
- On a Pixel phone, open the Phone app.
- Find and tap Call Screen.
- Enable Automatically screen calls.
- Choose a protection level.
Galaxy devices don’t seem to have an option as robust as the Pixel series. For now, users are limited to the Bixby Text Call button on incoming calls. Still, it’s a huge feature to have on hand.
With that enabled, you’ll allow Call Screen to trigger in certain circumstances. We recommend using basic protection at the minimum, as it will at least decline known spam callers. That alone saves a lot of time.
