Here’s Why Pixel Phones Are Ignoring The 80% Charge Limit

If you want to make sure that your phone’s battery lasts for the long run, you’ve probably put on a charging limit. Certain iPhones, Galaxy phones, OnePlus phones, Pixel phones, and other Android phones have the ability to stop charging once they hit a certain percentage (between 80% and 85%). Well, Pixel phones are missing the charging limit, but there’s a good reason for that.

In case you don’t know, Google just released the latest update for its Pixel phones. As with most updates, this one brings new features and new bugs. Shortly after this update dropped, users on Reddit started to report that their phones would skip the 80% charging limit and charge fully. Users thought that it was a bug. However, that’s not the case; it’s intended behavior.

Why Pixel phones are skipping the charging limit

The update in question is the March 2025 Pixel Drop (Android 15 QPR2). This brought some new features, and an old frustration. The battery-conscious among us hate waking up to see that their phones were trickle charging through the night. Well, after installing the new update, many users were met with a 100% battery upon waking up.

People vented their anger on Reddit and on the Google support page about the behavior. However, a user on the GrapheneOS forum revealed what was going on. Basically, the phone needs to recalibrate the estimated battery capacity. In order to do that, it needs to charge itself to 100% and stay there for a little while. This way, the system will have a better idea of the battery’s true percentage. Many people found their phones at 100% immediately after updating their phone.

However, once the battery level is calibrated, then the charging limit should work again. So, if you’re experiencing this issue, then just know that things will be back to normal soon. If it hasn’t recalibrated itself yet, charge your phone and let it stay there for a little while. Don’t worry, this action won’t scrape months off of your battery’s life.
