We’ve all been hungry for more information about Samsung’s upcoming XR headset. We don’t know anything about this device (not even its name), but at least we know that it looks amazing. Samsung gave users a first look at its XR headset.
“Project Moohan” is the unofficial name of this device. The word “Moohan” means “Infinity” in Korean, which speaks volumes about what Samsung plans for this device. We were hoping to hear more information about this device like during Unpacked, but the company didn’t spill any beans. Android XR was briefly mentioned during the event, but the company went on to talk about other tech.
So, we might hear more about it during a separate announcement or during the company’s next Unpacked event. Hopefully, it’s not the latter, as we’re anxious to get our hands on (and eyes in) this headset.
Samsung gives users a first look at its XR headset
It’s one thing to see the headset in renders, but it’s another thing to see it in the flesh. The company allowed eager tech nerds the opportunity to look at it. The company showcased the device, and it bears some resemblance to the Apple Vision Pro; however, there are some visual differences.
The main difference is that the Samsung XR headset device has a part that covers the wearer’s forehead. Also, the Apple Vision Pro has a strap that sits on top of the wearer’s head. It doesn’t look like Samsung’s headset will have that.
The Apple Vision Pro has a padded section that supports the back of the head. Samsung’s headset also has one, but Samsung’s looks like it’s shaped to better fit the contour of a person’s head than the Vision Pro.
Other than that, all of the major differences will lie in the software. As you know, Samsung and Google collaborated to develop the software that will run on this headset. Called Android XR, it literally looks like Android but formatted for XR devices. That statement might make you want to facepalm, but it looks more like the Android we see on smartphones than something like Android TV.
Information is still scarce
We’re missing some crucial bits of information regarding this new headset. However, we do know a few bits of information.
Firstly, the headset will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR+ Gen 2. This is a chipset primarily for XR, VR, and AR applications. It’s not quite as powerful as the chip powering the Vision Pro, but that’s not a big deal.
One thing that people noted was that Samsung’s headset differs from the Vision Pro in on fundamental way. Whereas the Vision Pro was primarily constructed out of metal, it looks like Samsung’s device mostly uses plastic.
Is that a bad thing? Not really. An XR headset is not a phone. A heavier phone isn’t really a big issue. However, XR headsets live on your head. Using lighter materials is a good thing because they don’t weigh your head down as much. Using plastic will lead to a device that’s easier to use.
Hopefully, this will lead to a much more competitive price. Apple really shocked the world when it unveiled the Vision Pro. While overcharging people for its tech is kind of an Apple trademark, the $3,499 price tag still rubbed the community the wrong way. If Samsung can deliver a device that’s priced decently, then it could steal this market away from Apple.
