Summary

  • Google is rebranding its Find My Device app to “Find Hub,” and this updated version has begun rolling out.
  • The new Find Hub app is expected to introduce ultra-wideband (UWB) precision finding, similar to Apple’s AirTags, for compatible devices like the Moto Tag.
  • Despite the app update being available (including via sideloading), the UWB finding feature is not yet active, suggesting either a cosmetic update for now or the need for an additional update to trackers themselves.

Out of the pre-I/O announcements Google made for Android earlier this week, the one with the potential to have the most practical impact was an update to the Find My Device app. After months of teasing, the new version is set to flip the switch on AirTag-like ultra-wideband precision finding on compatible devices like the Moto Tag, and in doing so, the app’s name is set to change. Now, it will simply be known as Find Hub.

Today, that update has started rolling out. It’s not yet live on the Play Store for all of our devices, but a tipster got the update and was kind enough to upload the new version to APKMirror. Sideloading this split APK changes the app’s name from Find My Device to Find Hub — but that’s about it so far.

Still no UWB finding

In our testing, today’s update has yet to flip the switch on UWB precision finding — at least on the Moto Tag. Of course, the device being used to find the tracker also needs to support ultra-wideband, and the Pixel 9 Pro we used for testing does indeed support UWB.

This seems to suggest one of two things: Either today’s update is purely cosmetic, only changing the app’s name, or the tracker tag itself will also require an update to flip the switch on UWB. It’s also entirely possible that both of these are true, and we’ll still need to wait for an update to the Moto Tag and the Find Hub app before UWB finding goes live.

For now, the Find nearby feature for the Moto Tag still takes you to the old UI where a shape fills in as you get closer to the device. The UWB finding interface, on the other hand, will guide you directly to the tracker using a compass-like interface, as shared by Android Police founder Artem Russakovskii on Twitter.

Version 3.1.337-2 of the app is the one that changes the name from Find My Device to Find Hub. In a way, though, that number is a bit telling — the previous version number was almost identical, save for the digit after the hyphen (3.1.337-1). Elsewhere in the app, the UI appears to be exactly the same as the updated interface that rolled out in March and added Google Maps location sharing for friends and family.
