Just last week we reported that Google Search may soon replace the famed I’m Feeling Lucky button with one for AI Mode, and that seems to be happening. Starting from the day I/O commences, the titan is rolling out AI Mode to everyone in the US, so you can engage in multimodal prompting and seek advanced reasoning in responses, all without bothering with the sign-up process for Google’s Labs program where it beta tests various experimental AI.

Although AI Mode is launching with basic functionality, Google’s I/O unveiling also commits to a sprawling roadmap for its future plans. The company hopes to build this mode out into a proper research assistant, replete with agentic capability. Most of the following changes will start their journey with small test groups in the Labs program before integration with AI Mode. The first among these is the Deep Search, bringing Gemini’s Deep Research model to search so you can push for detailed responses complete with citations and a report you could try submitting as a thesis.

Multimodal prompting isn’t forgotten in all the haste, with support for Lens getting better as Project Astra and its real-time query handling makes a beeline for integration with AI Mode in Search. We got our first look at this tech at I/O in 2024, and have patiently waited a whole year for this upgrade. When this rolls out, you’ll have full conversations with an agentic AI adept at handling your every query.

Everything agentic about Google AI is also coming to this mode, so the company has confirmed that Project Mariner will be integrated here as well. Once fully developed, it will help you summon a virtual agent for otherwise tedious tasks such as booking tickets, making your dinner reservation, and checking your schedule for local appointments.

With such deep AI integration, Google is throwing in a healthy dollop of personalization as well, so you can expect suggestions within AI Mode based on your prior queries, integration with other Google apps just like in Gemini, starting first with Gmail. Personalization stretches to visual representation of data you might need to digest. AI Mode can create custom graphics for sports and finance for now, and soon about other subjects, so you can pull statistics and draw inferences without staring at a wall of numbers for long.

AI Overviews

Google’s novel approach keeps generative search results separate from the kind we’re habituated to, by offering AI Mode as an opt-in choice, at least for now. In the conventional search results laden with web links, AI only plays an assistive role with AI Overviews where information from the top few web links is summarized into a potentially helpful answer. While we’re on the subject, it’s worth noting the company took to the I/O stage to confirm Overviews are now available across 200+ countries in 40+ languages now, including Arabic, Chinese, Malay, and Urdu. Moreover, the role of Gemini 2.5 in Search results we mentioned in the context of AI Mode will also affect Overviews.

Collectively, these changes signal that Google may not have decided whether or not to separate AI from its killer search engine, but it sure isn’t afraid to experiment. We just hope the data separates initial infatuation with emerging tech from loyalty towards AI before the two are fused together or the dated solution is culled altogether.
