Summary

  • Google will reveal Android updates a week before the main Google I/O 2025 event this year.
  • A special pre-recorded episode of “The Android Show” will stream on May 13th to share initial Android news.
  • Further Android announcements, potentially including Android 16 and Material You updates, are still expected during Google I/O itself.

Google I/O is when the company lets developers know what’s changing in its flagship software platforms each year. Traditionally, Android app developers have been the target audience for this event, but recent years have been more about the company’s AI products and what devs can do with them.

This year, it seems like Google is taking a different approach. Instead of pushing Android to the backseat during the event, we’re getting “a special deep-dive” into the company’s mobile OS one full week ahead of Google I/O 2025.

Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem, acknowledged that “What’s new with Android has always been a huge part of Google I/O.” But this year, the company’s vlog series, The Android Show, will stream a prerecorded I/O episode ahead of the event to reveal some of the big changes. “We’ll be sharing news now to get you ready for I/O,” said Samat, though I/O itself will still have “even more special announcements and surprises in store.”

Even with this special edition of The Android Show, Google says there will be more Android-related updates shared during I/O keynotes. And as always, some of the more nitty-gritty details will be revealed during technical sessions held for developers at the conference.

The I/O edition of The Android Show will go live at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Tuesday, May 13th. You can set an email reminder or add the event to your calendar from Google’s website dedicated to Android changes being announced at I/O 2025, or you can subscribe to the Android Developers channel on YouTube to catch the show.

Announcements we’re expecting from I/O 2025

With Android 16 clearing its final hurdle in beta development and the company confirming that it’s on track for a Q2 2025 launch, there’s a good chance Google’s next mobile OS could make its official debut — either alongside this show, at I/O itself, or shortly thereafter.

We’re also expecting a new, “Expressive” version of Material You to be shown off, though it might be more an evolution of Material Design 3 than a full version bump. And, based on the schedule Google published last week, there should be plenty of news about Gemini, Android XR, and web services, so stay tuned for some exciting developments in the mobile realm.
